Former Athens, Georgia boy-made-grey, Brian Burton, better known as DJ Danger Mouse (of Grey Album infamy) was recently in Atlanta, as previously reported, working with Cee-Lo on a project geniusly titled: Gnarls Barkley. Native producer/engineer and long-time goldenfiddle friend Ben Allen reports on those Gnarley sessions: “So, I spent the better part of March at Maze Studios in Atlanta cutting the new Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse record. We worked for two weeks straight, 12-14 hours a day. A typical session started with Danger Mouse spending a few hours writing and trying out new beats, before Cee-Lo arrived in the late afternoon. Lo would pick a favorite track and write lyrics over the looped track for a few hours. Once he had lyrics, we’d cut the vocals, print a rough mix at the end of the night, and then come back the next day and do it all over again. We ended up with tons of material, some of which is music unlike anything I’ve heard before. Some days, when Cee Lo was unable to be in the studio, MF Doom would come in, and we would work on mixes for the new Danger Doom record, which is also sickening (in the good way). The whole process was schizophrenic, going back and forth between the two projects, but an absolute blast, thanks to the amount of talent in the room at any given moment. Plus, DM and Cee-Lo happen to be two of the nicest, coolest guys in the biz, so that helps a lot as well when you’re pulling the long hours.”
