Pretzel Logic

From How To Advertise: *

In his landmark book The Act of Creation, Arthur Koestler states that, “creativity doesn’t create something out of nothing. It uncovers, selects, reshuffles, combines, synthesizes already existing facts, skills, and ideas.” Bisociation was the fancy word he came up with for putting existing ideas together to create something original -like linking the computer to telecommunications to create the internet.
We thought we’d try a little bisociation ourselves by synthesizing two of our personal favorite things: print advertising and Steely Dan or, more specifically, those adorable, little, buffalo mozarella, Zoloft-ball cartoons that shill for Pfizer and Aja, the 1977 musical masterpiece of downer surrealism. Two great tastes that taste great together? Maybe. Steely Dan and Zoloft have much more in common than you might imagine. Both are absurd, really, and hilarious in their own way; yet both can work miracles in the brain: Aja can treat depression as easily and effectively as one adult serving of Zoloft (we’ve found). Also, you’d have to be a scientologist, er, scientist to understand exactly how Zoloft works its rainbow-magic on your noodle, just as you’d have to be somewhat of a musical genius to comprehend fully the complex chord structures or production methods involved in the recording of Aja. Finally, both Zoloft and Aja make about as much sense by themselves as they do combined… Actually, come to think of it, this is a horrible attempt at bisociation. Strike this whole thing.

CONTEST: The first person to name the artist whose work appears on the cover of Aja will win a free goldenfiddle t-shirt (American Apparel in your size). Use the comments section.

Was it Hideki Fujii? Crazy pre body painting carnival looking design?

An old roommate was a fan…

Boston loves the fiddle.

JD Stone

Did you know that Phil Hartman designed the cover for Poco’s “Legend”?

L.A. Lindsay is my favorite Y.O.U. song—once you take away the Faith No More-esque intro.

As a kid, I never dug Steely Dan because all of their songs are about being dirty old men, but I’ve found as I get older and find that I’m attracted to girls increasingly younger than i am, I’ve developed a real appreciation for their craft. It’s not a situation of finding new music that really “speaks to me” it’s more like I’m (d)evolving into the kind of guy they were singing about all along.

USA! USA!

today’s post required way more effort than I was willing to put in.

Bah. I really needed a good goldenfiddle day… Lame.

Data, but the dirty old man thing got played roundabout the time of cousin dupree. But then maybe its just that all my cousins are nasty.

Data made snot come out of my nose. I think may shout something at the end of all my future emails and posts.
