i think that the government response was not only late but the local government was also at fault because it settled for levys that would hold a cat,3 storm you can never take short cuts when it comes the safety of all americans the government responded to 911 much faster because i was in their financial district.

To say that people still would have been homeless and we’d still have a crisis on our hands is true, but it also ignores the fact that countless people died because of lack of water, food, and rescue from the floodwaters. People hung on for days, but died because help was too slow getting to them. Even if Bush couldn’t utilize the National Guard, FEMA was a disgrace. Bush put an inept asshole with no expereince in charge of something so important. After 9/11, that is inexcusable. And rather than admit his mistake, he is compuonding the problem by dismissing everyone’s frustration and anger. There is no denying that government failed on so may levels. But, ultimately, we look to our President for leadership-but he was on vacation when our nation needed him the most.

That’s a load of crap…clearly you are either a democrat or very liberal and also very blind to how the government works. Bush is a constitutional abiding president. If Kanye wants to express himself he should go make his own telethon and vent there instead of making a stupid ass out of himself. Do you know that the president has to ask the government to do things first? The process is never fast. If we had a dictator in this country leading then maybe it would. It has to get approved by many people. I’d like to see the proof of Bush hating blacks. Ok, so the population of New Orleans is mainly black…did Bush make it that way? Did he cause this hurricane so that all these people were stranded? Did he make them not get the right education so that they couldn’t be rich and have cars to evacuate? Even if the people got out in time(and they DID know about the hurricane) they still would’ve been homeless and we’d still have a crisis on our hands.

Sure, everyone is entitled to their own opinion about Bush…and that’s all it is. It’s not fact. If Bush screwed up, he knows it…if he tried everything in his power…he’ll know that too. We won’t. We just have to hope and pray that our leader will follow through.

I live in south Florida and we get hit with hurricanes all the damn time. The government NEVER steps in until after the fact. That’s just the way it’s always been. The first response is always from the state and it’s neighbors, so you can’t blame our government for the damage an “act of God” creates (even though New Orleans has been a sitting duck for YEARS). So don’t blame GWB… even though danceswithmonths comment was right on the money.

But Mike, this was a CAT 5 until the last moments!!!! And it was anticipated that the levee’s would be breached, so that does make this situation unique in that regard. This wasn’t a terrorist attack that cannot be planned for. This was a hurricane that allowed FEMA plenty of time to mobilize. And even if, as GWB said, people should expect it to take the government 2 days to respond to a disaster, SOMEONE should have been there by Wednesday, since the hurricane hit on Monday. By the latest, Thursday.

I don’t blame the government for an act of God…..I blame it for letting down those who suffered from the act of God.

From what I’ve heard and read, the local governments have been asking for 10+ years for additional money from the federal government to shore up the levees and make them stronger, and the feds have denied the money. As a matter of fact, the federal gov decreased it’s normal funding. That’s with a Democrat and a Republican in office, so party lines mean crap. This was an all around failure on everyone’s part.

I have to say though, the American people haven’t let these people down. Times like this make me proud to be an American. After 9/11, the help that poured into NY after the terrorist attacks was overwhelming. Even though the suffereing here was horrendous, it was so touching to see that others cared so much. I’m sure the people of the Gulf Coast must feel the same way.
