Welcome To My Backlash
The great Time magazine George Clooney rim job continues in pictures. Michael Clayton was excellent and Intolerable Cruelty was fun, but Out Of Sight was ten years ago. So let’s be clear about something; George Clooney is not a great actor, and there’s a whole lotta shit packed in between those three flicks. He’s average. Better than Vince Vaughn, but, like Vince Vaughn, he has clearly defined limits. EXACTLY.
- Nice picks, George. You went with Elswit! What we don’t get is this:
I thought Daniel Day Lewis had the best performance of the year. Then I saw La Vie En Rose. Marion Cotillard does an old person trying to be young, instead of what everyone does — a young person trying to be old. It’s a stunning performance.
Then you go with Christie? Oh, and you didn’t pick Tilda? Asshole? Hmmmm, kinda makes us rethink the tone of her speech. Notice, she doesn’t acknowledge him on the way to the mic, and he doesn’t clap.
My Paper Mind: Cooler than George Clooney. (via exhausticated)
(via kottke)
its the crisply pressed shirts and hair pomade that get the rep.
well put, Freetime. really.
Facts of Life.
god would you look at that yard. want.
i remember reading the article and having the same thought re: Joel Stein’s “serious man-crush.”
I call phooey on this. I’m not going to blame Clooney for the headline on some huge puff piece any more than I’m going to read it (and isn’t everything bitched about on that blog basically acknowledged on page 2 of the Time piece?).
Man’s got presence, and smarts, and - despite the odd bit of smug, the showy lifestyle, the faux-art crap like Solaris - he’s a relatable dude who likes movies and gets involved with interesting projects. Look at Will Smith’s filmography; what a load of disposable cut-and-paste action crap that’s totally ridden its star’s likeability. I’d happily scrap every piece of Smith’s work to save Three Kings.
what? even MILF and cookies?!
i’ll give clooney credit for taking chances and approaching his films and causes with conviction.. which might explain his popularity and the comparisons to old hollywood (male) movie stars. walk the walk talk the talk sorta thing.
of course, taking chances doesn’t mean making bank and there’s no disputing the hard numbers laid out by Freetime.
Tilda was shinier than Oscar! Yeah they weren’t crazy about each other.
Nice. Time can’t even spell “original.”
clooney is a character actor (who essentially plays different variations of himself…he looks directly at you intently (clayton), looks down when talking about his faults (er) or saying something witty with a ‘i can’t believe i’m george clooney grin’ (in all coen movies and in real life)) who happens to be a leading man in a time when movie stars are basically dead…
he is not supposed to be flashy in the movies as he is supposed to be one of ‘us’…where on the other hand dan day lewis plays roles where we could never be like that but are fascinated by people who are
i love it when people break down an actor into 2-3 stock moves. will smith has intense gaze nose flare-age and hand on the hip with neck swivel.
Michael Clayton has nothing to say but corporations are evil. So, if a corporation gets an opening, they’ll do something to harm the public.
Roll credits. Two hours gone.
You don’t have to be a Republican to need a little more subtlety with that subject matter. That movie’s a turd, but only because people keep putting lipstick on it.
i think its more like: if corporation get an opening, they will do whatever they can to make money (and if it happens to hurt people, its ok as long as we don’t get caught). Is that for all companies, no…but when you have an entity that must meet X amount of growth or else i lose my job then a situation is created that leads to less than ‘ethical’ decisions being made
that’s they way it is…i have and continue to work for various corporate entities in a role where you get to see all of the shit
and i’ve worked for a company that i consider ‘good’ by ethic standards, but that never stopped them from getting you in a room trying to ‘pressure’ you into giving your own money to their PAC…and if they could have painted the entire parking lot, the road to the store and the employees orange they would have
thus, if you don’t think what happened in ‘clayton’ could not (and does not) happen today, then they have already won
From what I’ve read/seen from them both, they’ve had nothing but kind words for each other. And you left out his key final quote:
If [Michael Clayton] has a shot at anything, it’s best supporting actress with Tilda Swinton.”
p.s. Say what you will but the dude is a stone cold fox.

yeah how could he not have picked Tilda when they starred together. she must not have liked him.
