“Google has filed a patent application for water based data centers. The proposed idea is to have ships full of servers, storage systems and networking gear, anchored up to 7 miles offshore. They could also be mobilized when needed to serve regions where it’s not feasible to build a data center on land. The data barges would be powered by the motion of waves and cooled by the ocean water. Added bonus: the offshore status means no more property taxes.” (via psfk)
